Strategic management as a structural basis for the sustainability and competitiveness of MSMEs
Abstract
In a complex, dynamic, and globalized market where businesses face challenges related to competitiveness and sustainability, strategic management emerges as a key factor in enhancing operational efficiency and ensuring business viability. The objective of this study was to analyze the impact of strategic management on the sustainability and competitiveness of SMEs, focusing on the performance of owners, executives, and key decision-makers. A quantitative, non-experimental, cross-sectional research approach was employed, applying surveys administered to 100 companies in the State of Mexico. The reliability of the instrument was assessed through Cronbach’s alpha coefficient, which yielded a value of 0.898, indicating high reliability. The results show that 62.3% of businesses conduct a Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, and Threats (SWOT) analysis; however, only 25 out of every 100 have a defined job profile. In addition, four out of ten MSMEs report difficulties in accessing financing, which mainly limits innovation, as well as customer service and follow-up. In the area of sustainability, 85.2% of MSMEs with high-level sustainable practices also promote environmental education. This result is consistent with a positive relationship between strategic management and better organizational and sustainability practices. It is recommended to continuously redefine, implement, and monitor strategies aimed at studying customer needs and satisfaction, exploring new markets, investing in innovation, and strengthening access to financing.
